La sanction vient de tomber, les clubs gabonais ne pourront plus prendre part aux compétitions continentales en l’absence d’un championnat national.
La Confédération africaine de football (CAF) vient en réalité d’appliquer à l’encontre du Gabon, les dispositions du règlement 2021-2022 de la Ligue des champions de la CAF qui interdit toute participation de pays sans championnat. L’article 7 de ce règlement indique à cet effet : « Si pour une raison quelconque, la ligue nationale d’une fédération a été arrêtée plus d’une année, la fédération en question ne pourra engager aucun club à la Ligue des champions ». C’est le cas du Gabon où le championnat national de football est suspendu depuis plus de 700 jours.
Pourtant, en novembre 2021, les responsables de l’Association des clubs professionnels de football du Gabon (ACPFG) avaient animé une conférence de presse à Libreville afin d’exiger la reprise des championnats de première et de deuxième divisions de football à l’arrêt depuis plus d’un an. Mais cette exigence, comme celle de l’Association nationale des footballeurs professionnels gabonais (ANFPG), est restée sans réponse de la part du gouvernement. En prenant pour prétexte, la crise sanitaire, les autorités refusent de relancer les activités sportives.
